Obituary for Harold "Wes" Plant

Harold Wesley “Wes” Plant, 95, of Shreve entered into eternal rest on December 12, 2019 at LifeCare Hospice, Wooster.

He was born Sept.18, 1924 in Wooster, Ohio to the late Lloyd and Harriett (Kirschner) Plant, soon after the family moved to Shreve, where he lived his entire life.

He married is high school sweetheart, Winifred A. (Smith) Plant, June 22,1946. They were married for 70 years before her passing in 2016.

Wes is survived by three children, Bethany (Bud) Kobilarcik of Wooster, Harold L. (Carol) Plant of Upper Arlington and E. Dean (Rebecca) Plant of Shreve; a dear nephew, Randy (Linda) Plant of Wooster; seven grand-children, Meg (Troy) Wilcox and Ann Kobilarcik both of Wooster, Nicole Plant and Audrey Plant both of Columbus, Rachel (Robert) Schmitt of Apple Creek, Hannah Plant of Fairlawn, and Mason Plant of Shreve; five great grand-children; a brother, Donald Plant of Shreve; a sister, Grace (Bill) Watson of Jeromesville.

Wes was a WWII veteran, having enlisted at the age of 17 in the U.S. Army Air Corps, just after graduating from Shreve High School. He was stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, a crew chief working on B-24 bombers with the 4th Photo Reconnaissance Division from 1943 to 1945. He was a life member of the Shreve American Legion.

He worked for Ohio Power Company for 40 years, retiring as a meter supervisor in 1986.

Wes was very involved in and proud to be part of the Wayne County community, serving as a Village of Shreve Council member for 4 years and as council president for 4 years, he also served for 32 years as both a Clinton Township Trustee and Wooster Community Hospital Joint Township District Hospital Board member. Wes was also instrumental in securing the current buildings and grant funding for the County Line Historical Society in Shreve, Ohio, where he served as president.

He was a lifelong, active member of the Shreve United Methodist Church serving in different capacities through the years.

In 2008, Wes was awarded the Old Hickory Award by then Gov. Ted Strickland in appreciation for his many years of service to the Democratic Party and his community.

After retiring, he would often times be seen walking with his sheltie, in and around the Shreve community. He loved sports and was an outstanding fast pitch softball and baseball player as a 1st baseman, later coaching little league. He was an avid bowler, and was on many different leagues for many years.

Above all, Wes enjoyed attending his family’s sporting events and activities and spending time with his family and friends, which brought great joy to his life. He was a hardworking individual and stood behind the causes he believed in. With his outgoing and friendly personality he had many friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an unselfish, generous nature and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. He will be especially missed by those who called him “Pops”.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by brothers; Edward, Guy, Lloyd Jr., Roy and Fred Plant; sisters ,Lavina (Plant) (Bower) Case, Vera (Plant) Miller, Margaret (Plant) Orwiler and an infant sister Harriett.

Family and friends may call Sunday, Dec. 15th from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Schlabach Funeral Home, Shreve. Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 16th at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Rev. Michael Grant and Pastor Dennis Rinehart officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Shreve, where military honors will be conducted by the 555th Honors Detachment.
