Obituary for Marilyn "June" Wilcox

Marilyn “June” Wilcox, 88, of Shreve passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at her home following declining health.

She was born June 16, 1931 in Greer (Knox County) Ohio, daughter of the late John Lewis Smith- hisler and Erma Zimmerman. June married Vance Wilcox on August 7, 1949, in the Hopewell Church in Shreve. Vance recently passed away on May 30, 2019.

June graduated from Big Prairie High School, was a loving wife and mother, and a dedicated 31 year employee of the Diamonite Plant (makers of speciality ceramics) in Shreve as a quality-control supervisor. Following retirement, June worked 10 years for Wilcox Food Market at the Shell Station in Wooster.

She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially her signature apple dumplings, peanut brittle and homemade cookies, then sharing goodies with others. Family was important to June and she looked forward to trips to the west coast to visit her siblings and their families in Washington, Oregon and California. Likewise, June was always a gracious host, welcoming family and friends into her home when visiting Ohio.

June volunteered on the Wayne County Care Center Auxiliary in the early 2000’s. She was also a member of the Shreve United Methodist Church.

June and Vance raised their family and lived most of their married life in Shreve and cherished time spent with family. The family would like to thank the LifeCare Hospice team for their loving care, compassion and kindness to June during the past eight months.

Surviving are six children, Connie (Paul) Long, Larry Wilcox, Terry (BJ) Wilcox, Gale (Deb) Wilcox, Debbie (Kim) Chapman, Les (Jan) Wilcox; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Griffin of Upland, California and brothers, Howard Smithhisler of Polk, Ohio, Ron Smithhisler of Winston, Oregon and Roger Smithhisler of Edgewood, Washington.

In addition to her parents and husband, June was preceded in death by a sister, Wava Dutter and brother, Donald Smithhisler.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 18th at 11:30 am at Schlabach Funeral Home, Shreve with Rev. Michael Grant officiating. Burial will follow in Shreve Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the funeral home.
